LEARN The Drawing Skills Architecture School Assumes You Already Know
Former University Lecturer, Chartered Architect and Mentor helping architecture students develop the drawing skills, design thinking and confidence they need to succeed.
Hi, I’m Sonia. I’m a Chartered Architect, former University Lecturer, mentor and founder of Reykjavik Sketcher.
Over the last 15+ years, I’ve taught thousands of architecture and design students, reviewed portfolios, led degree programmes and helped aspiring architects build confidence in their architecture drawing and creative skills.
But I wasn’t always confident myself.
I know what it’s like to feel behind, doubt your abilities and wonder if you’re good enough. I wasn’t the student everyone expected to become an architect, yet I went on to receive a scholarship to study in Japan, qualify as a Chartered Architect, teach at university level, and mentor students around the world.
That’s why I’m passionate about making architecture drawing and design education more accessible.
I believe drawing isn’t talent - it’s a skill. With the right guidance, anyone can learn to think visually, communicate their ideas, build a stronger portfolio and gain confidence in their creativity.
Whether you’re preparing an architecture portfolio, learning perspective drawing, improving your hand drawing skills or reconnecting with architecture after a break, I’m here to help you take the next step with confidence.

Drawing isn't talent. It's a skill.
Most architecture students think they're "bad at drawing". The truth? Drawing is a skill that can be learned. After teaching thousands of architecture and design students, I've seen firsthand that confidence grows through practice, not natural talent. My mission is to make architecture drawing accessible, practical and enjoyable for everyone.

Professional Architecture Portfolio Feedback Before You Submit
Your portfolio is often the first impression you make.
But a strong architecture portfolio isn't just about having good projects. It's about selecting, editing and presenting your work so the person reviewing it can quickly understand your ideas, skills and potential.
Whether you're applying to architecture school, an internship, postgraduate study or your first architecture job, I'll give you honest, professional feedback to help you strengthen your portfolio before you submit.
I've spent over 15 years teaching architecture and design students and have reviewed hundreds of student portfolios as a University Lecturer, programme leader, Chartered Architect and mentor.
I'll review your portfolio with the same critical eye I used when guiding students through applications, design reviews and presentations - looking at both the quality of the individual projects and how effectively the portfolio communicates your work as a whole.
My goal isn't to change your work or turn it into someone else's portfolio.
It's to help you recognise your strongest work, communicate it clearly and present it with confidence.
Is This Right for You?
A Portfolio Confidence Review™ could be right for you if you're:
Applying to architecture school or university
Preparing a portfolio for postgraduate or Master’s study
Applying for an architecture internship or work experience
Preparing to apply for your first architecture or design job
Unsure which projects or pieces of work to include
Struggling with the order, layout or flow of your portfolio
Worried that your portfolio isn't communicating your ideas clearly
Looking for an experienced second opinion before you submit
Feeling too close to your own work to know what needs improving
You don't need a perfect portfolio before you send it to me. That's what the review is for.
What I'll Look At
I'll review your portfolio as a whole, considering things such as:
Project selection
Portfolio structure and flow
Page layout and composition
Visual hierarchy
Architectural drawings
Sketches and development work
Plans, sections and elevations
Presentation and graphic communication
How clearly your design thinking is communicated
The balance between process and outcomes
Written information and supporting text
Areas that feel repetitive, confusing or unnecessary
Opportunities to strengthen the overall portfolio
Every portfolio is different, so my feedback will focus on the areas that will make the biggest difference to yours.

A Little About Me
I'm Sonia Nicolson, a Chartered Architect, former University Lecturer and architecture mentor.
I've spent more than 15 years teaching architecture and design students, leading university programmes, reviewing portfolios and helping students communicate their ideas more clearly.
I've seen hundreds of portfolios over the years - from students applying to architecture school for the first time to graduates preparing to enter practice.
And one thing I've learned is that students are often far more capable than they think.
Sometimes they simply need an experienced pair of eyes to help them see what's working, what's getting in the way and what to focus on next.
That's exactly what this review is designed to do.
Ready for an Experienced Second Opinion?
If you've been staring at your portfolio for so long that you can no longer tell what's working, send it to me. I'll help you cut through the noise, identify the changes that matter and present your work as clearly and confidently as possible.
